UEA cuts votes

Maltheus hears that UEA has decieded that in their whole 320 acres estate there is no room to have a voting booth on voting day! What utter stupidity from them - Surely somewhere there is a spare room. From an institution that is trying to prevent a gap between 'town and gown' then it surely foolish to make it less convenient for students to vote. What better way for students to engage with their local community as voting. Hopefully they will sort this out and get a voting booth there. Otherwise they will be making it harder for only 14,000 potenital voters. Maybe if the local political parties made this a cross party issue then there would be some change!

I agree that it amazing they don't have a room, but if students care enough they will walk the extra to the school. You can't have polling stations on everyones doorsteps - other people travel a long way to vote (e.g. in GA3 Bowthorpe!) The LibDems whinging in the press today was pathetic. Grow up, Judith Lubbock ... as I say, if they care enough about politics and the City they will either walk to the polling station or vote by post!

Doesn't axing a polling station go against the so called desire of the government to make voting easier, to bring it to the people, indeed, to raise voter turnout ?

My guess is that Labour are pleased as they know that students vote in greater numbers for the Lib Dems than they do for Labour so it will help Labour.

As for a lib Dem councillor raising the issue in the press, what a nerve of Mr little to complain about it. Whatever next Mr Little, moaning that a councillor is concerned about an issue. Surely that is what councillors are supposed to do ?
